Top 10 Takeaways from the National Conference on Volunteerism & Service
The APCO team left New Orleans with our bags full of information and our heads full of ideas. Here are our the lessons learned from this year’s NCVS. We’re already looking forward to next year in Chicago!
The New Orleans spirit is a force greater than any hurricane. The commitment to rebuild and repair the city has not wavered, and the city’s do-it-yourself approach has been driving the rebirth. Branford Marsalis said it best in the opening plenary: “We have a lot of different kinds of music here, and the sound is perseverance.”

Tripping Over the Words
Day 1 of the National Conference on Volunteering and Service is complete, and we’re looking forward to the start of Day 2.
Already this year, as in the past few years, there is a major focus on skills-based volunteering and pro bono as the next great frontier of corporate giving. Apparently, more than half of companies now offer some skills-based volunteering opportunities to their employees – which I suppose makes it not much of a frontier anymore.

The Cavs Really DID Win the Lottery
If you’re not a basketball junkie, you may not have noticed that the NBA lottery happened on Tuesday night.
I was watching but wasn’t thrilled with the results—as a Washington Wizards season ticket holder, I was hoping for the #1 pick to get some help out of the Eastern Conference basement. Oh, well—maybe we can trade for some better players this summer.

Four Presidents and 1000 Points of Light
I attended an event in the Kennedy Center’s elegant Opera House last night and sat 10 rows behind four former presidents of the United States.
I saw former secretaries of state, senators, congressmen. Even heard Carrie Underwood sing, along with Garth Brooks and a bunch of other A-list performers.
But the brightest light wasn’t among those names.

A Worthy Tribute
Tonight, former President George H.W. Bush will be honored at the Kennedy Center for his leadership and vision in the realm of service and volunteerism. He famously referred to the "thousand points of light" in his 1989 Inaugural address, and this served as the inspiration for a campaign that formally encourages Americans to consider service as an answer to community challenges.

Sargent Shriver: America’s Ambassador of Peace
When news arrived earlier this week that R. Sargent Shriver died, tens of thousands of Americans knew exactly who he was. Not just because he was the brother-in-law of President John F. Kennedy, not just because he was the father of Maria Shriver or father-in-law of Arnold Schwarzenegger. No, it was because we all knew him as the founding director of the Peace Corps and architect of the war on poverty. It was almost a mere footnote that he happened to be the Democratic candidate for vice president to George McGovern in 1972.

Something to Consider When You Get Your W2 Form This Month
Sometime this month, your employer will hand you (or mail you) your 2010 W2 form, so you can prepare your taxes. Most of us set aside this document and pull it out in a panic in early April so we can file on time.
