Applying Moneyball Logic to Managing a Corporate Volunteer Program

Spring training is right around the corner, so I thought it would be appropriate to dig into an analogy thrown out by Taproot’s Aaron Hurst at the 2011 BSR conference in San Francisco. Aaron compared the recent innovations in corporate volunteer practices to Moneyball. If you’ve read the book or seen the movie, you know the story: Oakland A’s GM Billy Beane revolutionized MLB roster management by employing a new approach to analyzing a player’s value. The “data nerds” have created a system that is more efficient and less risky, leading to improved performance for a franchise on the field and the balance sheet.

Using Social Media to Communicate Corporate Responsibility

There is no doubt that in recent years, the way in which most people consume and share information has been completely transformed by social media. Recognizing this, many companies now use social media to interact with consumers and stakeholders to broadcast their messages and one of the most interesting ways they are using social media is to drive participation, enthusiasm and awareness of their corporate responsibility efforts. At the National Conference on Volunteering and Service (NCVS) in June, I attended a session called “How Social Media Can Advance Your EVP and CSR Efforts” that provided terrific insights and examples of companies that are using social media in creative and meaningful ways.

And You Think YOU Have Money Problems…

All of the talk over the last few weeks about the federal budget has me hyper-focused on how I’m spending my own resources. I’m lucky to have options, because I have a job and can still pay my mortgage AND eat every month. But there are plenty of Americans who can’t make that statement.

Rooting for the Underdog

Whether it’s March Madness or the world of social change, I can’t help but root for the underdog. When it comes to getting funding or visibility, many social innovators – no matter how good their ideas are – never get a fair shot because they lack the means and connections to get in front of decision-makers who control the resources.

Do I Have a Deal for You!

Were you turned off by Groupon’s Super Bowl ad like Aman and I were? Well, I have an alternative Daily Deal site for you to consider…Philanthroper. Just keep in mind that it’s not a deal where you get something, it’s a deal where you give something.

Honoring World AIDS Day – Kill a Celebrity?

That’s right. Well, virtually anyway. To honor World AIDS Day this year, Alicia Keys has asked celebrity friends Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Kim Kardashian, Usher and others to conduct a “digital life sacrifice” as part of a new campaign to raise money for Keys’ AIDS charity Keep a Child Alive. In this digital life sacrifice, celebrities will log off Twitter and Facebook until $1 million has been raised. The campaign also has provocative ads that show celebrities in coffins.

Social Purpose Meets Technology Innovation at CGI

Technology—especially mobile technology—has been a pervasive theme of CGI 2010. Most people recognize the tremendous power of technology to help connect people with each other and to useful information. Yesterday an interesting commitment was announced by Refugees United, Ericsson, and Delta Partners that typified this kind of application. Their new mobile phone application will help refugees locate their [...]

Help a Local School While You Wait for Your Coffee

Do you have an iPad that you tote with you everywhere?  Does it entertain you for those three minutes while you’re waiting in the line at Starbucks every morning? Or are you someone who camps out for hours in Starbucks with your laptop; a triple-shot, non-fat, no-whip latte; and a muffin while you surf the [...]

Sustainable Football Kits

Although it’s not really my habit to buy a jersey that represents my favorite team(s), I may change my policy to buy a USA World Cup jersey. Not only to show my support for Landon and the boys, but also because its “green.”

If We Build It – Will You Stay?

As the World Cup heats ups (go USA!), I wanted to share a little about two great campaigns that I’m rooting for off the field. Since this is the first World Cup in Africa, it serves as a great platform to rally around issues that impact the continent. United Against Malaria  and 1Goal were launched last [...]
