Adding Value in Urbanization

Every so often, I’m reminded that we’re living in the future. One such “wow” moment was last week, when I attended the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center’s Global Corporate Citizenship Conference. The conference kicked off with a panel on “Issues and Opportunities in Urban Development,” discussing the future of our planet’s cities in the face of a new wave of urbanization. The 20th century saw a global shift toward urbanization – a trend which has only increased in the new century. My colleague Kitty Potter wrote recently that the global population has doubled in just 50 years – and more and more are leaving rural and suburban regions in favor of cities.

Approaching 7 Billion

On Monday, my 4 year old came home from kindergarten and announced, “Mum, today is World Population Day.” Given I have spent the better part of this year delving into critical global issues – urbanization, vulnerable communities, the impacts of climate change to name a few – this seemed to be the sort of world calendar event I should know about.

The State of Corporate Sustainability in China

I’ve had the privilege to serve as co-chair of the CSR committee (which is soon to be renamed the Business Sustainability Committee) of the American Chamber of Commerce-China (AmCham) for the last few years. Last year we partnered with The Conference Board (TCB) to get a better understanding of AmCham member’s needs and the current state of sustainability among companies doing business in China. We were particularly interested to learn about what companies are currently doing, what their challenges are, what tools & mechanisms they have in place, and what the role of the Chinese government is in driving the sustainability agenda.

A Year of Awakenings

When you celebrate a birthday or an anniversary, it normally doesn’t pass without a fair amount of emotion, and one year of Shared Purpose is no different! This was a huge year of awakenings – either slow dawnings or lightning-bolt revelations – for many of us in the business and extended CSR/sustainability communities. The breadth and depth of the issues continue to challenge us all. The spectrum of CSR/sustainability activities is at its richest, and it just keeps expanding, like the Shared Purpose word cloud above. Where to begin? Right now, Asia is officially experiencing another food crisis. According to the World Bank and ADB, residents of this region are looking at “fast and persistent increases in the cost of many

Corporate Water Risk and Management from FT Conference

One-third of U.S. counties in the lower 48 states are expected to experience severe water shortages by 2050. Some nations in Asia, Africa, and South America already face severe shortage. For many companies, especially those in water-intensive industries (e.g., agriculture, food and beverage), water scarcity is a material business issue. In a world where nearly one billion people are without access to clean water, it is also front and center on the sustainability agenda for human rights and the environment.

A Look at Integrated Reporting from FT’s Investing in a Sustainable Future Conference

We had a chance to attend part of the FT’s Investing in a Sustainable Future Conference yesterday. While some of the discussion remained in well-trod territory, the panel on integrated reporting provided a candid discussion of the progress on and barriers to integrated reporting. Some highlights below:

A Quick Prayer for the New Year

Here in Hong Kong, this year is ending in a whirlwind of activity that seems to stretch somehow across the holiday season, Christmas, Western New Year and into Chinese New Year… meaning we don’t seem to be slowing down, moving from the year that was into the year to come, and reflecting on everything as we should. It’s business as usual, with colleagues working across blurred economic, cultural, religious and political boundaries. I don’t think this is unique to APCO; it’s a reflection of the world in which we’re living. And through my work, I seem to be able to coexist in the modern global economy while engaging in a variety of the most pressing social and environmental challenges that face me and my kids.

Blog Action Day 2010 – Water. Dialogue. Action.

Today it is expected that more than 30 million people around the world will check out 4,000 of their favorite blogs and read something about water. I suspect that it won’t be the first time that most people will have read some of the water statistics – like how more than one billion people don’t [...]

CGI 2010: Highlights From Day One

It was a packed first day at CGI 2010.
