Four Presidents and 1000 Points of Light

I attended an event in the Kennedy Center’s elegant Opera House last night and sat 10 rows behind four former presidents of the United States. I saw former secretaries of state, senators, congressmen. Even heard Carrie Underwood sing, along with Garth Brooks and a bunch of other A-list performers. But the brightest light wasn’t among those names.

Corporate Water Risk and Management from FT Conference

One-third of U.S. counties in the lower 48 states are expected to experience severe water shortages by 2050. Some nations in Asia, Africa, and South America already face severe shortage. For many companies, especially those in water-intensive industries (e.g., agriculture, food and beverage), water scarcity is a material business issue. In a world where nearly one billion people are without access to clean water, it is also front and center on the sustainability agenda for human rights and the environment.

Happy International Corporate Philanthropy Day

Today is International Corporate Philanthropy Day, and if you live in the United States, you’ll probably see or read a news spot about it. In New York, the Committee to Encourage Corporate Philanthropy (CECP) is organizing a CEO conference and a joint event with the United Nations, and the Empire State Building is specially lit in CECP colors. Many other events are being held across the country, organized by member companies such as Moody’s to publicize what they are doing to mark ICP Day.

Has CR Become a Parody?

We all saw it. We probably cringed a little. Groupon’s controversial “Save the Money” spot got the most ink for mocking the plethora of CR-focused advertising. It made me ask the question – are the feel good, socially responsible ads believable or has it just become a joke?

Supply Chains and Responsibility

The focus on supply chains continues to grow –  this week two items are worth reviewing.  First is the recent article in Harvard Business Review by Rosebeth Moss Kanter. In her article, It’s Time To Take Full Responsibility, Professor Kanter describes the new world order where responsibility for products no longer ends with quality, customer satisfaction [...]

Health and the Built Environment

I recently had the opportunity to attend the Washington Ideas Forum  and listen to a discussion about how to address the issue of obesity and chronic disease in the United States. The issue of health and wellness is a material one for a many companies, particularly in the food and consumer goods space. And we’ve [...]

Join the Debate…. Give me a break!

Once again the sky is falling!  I just received an invitation from BSR to join a webcast:  ”The Case Against CSR – Join the Debate” in response to two recent articles questioning the value of CSR (here and here). Really?  After how many years of corporations around the world using their resources to address issues [...]

Help a Local School While You Wait for Your Coffee

Do you have an iPad that you tote with you everywhere?  Does it entertain you for those three minutes while you’re waiting in the line at Starbucks every morning? Or are you someone who camps out for hours in Starbucks with your laptop; a triple-shot, non-fat, no-whip latte; and a muffin while you surf the [...]

What’s New in Corporate Giving?

The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s annual corporate giving issue was published Monday. And for the first time, USA Today co-published the results for the annual survey—they have a really cool online chart that can sort data by year and industry. Each year, this issue provides corporations with some valuable data and trend information.  A few things popped [...]

Mad Men with a Soul?

Like many of you, I have Mad Men  fever. With the new season underway, it reminded me of an article that appeared in Forbes earlier this month, entitled “The Most Imaginative CSR Ad Campaigns.” The article discusses how the world’s most recognized brands are using their advertising dollars to talk about their CSR initiatives. Whether, [...]
