The International Integrated Reporting Committee published a Discussion Paper on September 12 that presented a compelling case for integrated reporting. One of the more interesting statistics cited was that physical and financial assets represent a shrinking percentage of market value – falling from 83 percent in 1975 to 19 percent in 2009! Many of these intangible assets aren’t covered in most reports, which speaks to the need for different and more interconnected reporting. Some of the reasons it’s worth the read:

The setting is Wall Street and the topic is “Aligning Strategy, Sustainability and Financial Communication.” We are at Deutsche Bank speaking with about 35 emerging market company investor relations officers about ESG-related megatrends shaping the global operating and investment outlook.

Using Social Media to Communicate Corporate Responsibility
There is no doubt that in recent years, the way in which most people consume and share information has been completely transformed by social media. Recognizing this, many companies now use social media to interact with consumers and stakeholders to broadcast their messages and one of the most interesting ways they are using social media is to drive participation, enthusiasm and awareness of their corporate responsibility efforts. At the National Conference on Volunteering and Service (NCVS) in June, I attended a session called “How Social Media Can Advance Your EVP and CSR Efforts” that provided terrific insights and examples of companies that are using social media in creative and meaningful ways.

What’s Your Story?
Corporate responsibility, including volunteerism, has a significant impact on overall corporate reputation, driving up to 50 percent of consumer decisions*. If you are not sharing your employee engagement story with key stakeholders, you are missing an opportunity to positively impact your company’s reputation.
Companies invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in employee engagement strategy and implementation each year. How are you sharing the outcomes of this investment with the stakeholders that matter most to your business?

Corporate Citizens of the World
Having spent as much of my life and career outside my home country as in, I’ve always found the question, “Where are you from?” to be a difficult one to answer. At the 2011 Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship Conference in Minneapolis, it was interesting to see companies from a wide range of sectors seeking to answer various forms of this question as they build, expand and nurture their global corporate citizenship programs.
