Making it Stick
Happy anniversary, Shared Purpose! Last year, we saw amazing CR communication campaigns that capitalized on huge international platforms. Idol Gives Back used the epic American Idol platform, One Goal and United Against Malaria capitalized on the World Cup (in Africa for the first time) and Keep a Child Alive used celebrity social networks. In addition, companies used mega-advertising budgets to showcase their initiatives. It was definitely a year of great ideas and creativity.

Millennials are a Discerning Bunch
Last week, consulting firm Universum released its survey research on the top 150 employers young professionals want to work for. The survey polled more than 10,000 college graduates who have been in the working world between 1-8 years.
If you haven’t seen it, it’s an interesting list. As a Universum representative pointed out in a Wall Street Journal article on the subject, “Young professionals generally want to work at companies that the professionals like as consumers.” And that explains some of it, granted. Disney*, Amazon, and Whole Foods are all nifty brands that appeal to young people.

Not Just Another Fat Tuesday
Some may refer to today as Fat Tuesday, but for me, and for many men and women around the world, today is International Women’s Day (IWD). In fact, today marks the 100th anniversary of the occasion, which was established in 1911 to support women’s causes and celebrate women’s achievements.

Has CR Become a Parody?
We all saw it. We probably cringed a little. Groupon’s controversial “Save the Money” spot got the most ink for mocking the plethora of CR-focused advertising. It made me ask the question – are the feel good, socially responsible ads believable or has it just become a joke?

Honoring World AIDS Day – Kill a Celebrity?
That’s right. Well, virtually anyway. To honor World AIDS Day this year, Alicia Keys has asked celebrity friends Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Kim Kardashian, Usher and others to conduct a “digital life sacrifice” as part of a new campaign to raise money for Keys’ AIDS charity Keep a Child Alive. In this digital life sacrifice, celebrities will log off Twitter and Facebook until $1 million has been raised. The campaign also has provocative ads that show celebrities in coffins.

The Numbers Steal the Show
Yes, there was Ashton and Demi. Ben Stiller made us laugh. The President and First Lady inspired us. But what really blew me away was that CGI closed yesterday with astounding metrics of impact and change. Since CGI’s inception, it has been about demonstrating progress and making lasting impact. Though it is sometimes lost in [...]

The Big “C” at CGI. Finally.
Even after my third year at CGI, it still inspires and excites me. The energy in the halls yesterday was electric (solar powered, of course). So many great ideas and great minds in one place. My pick for today is the Special Session addressing Cancer in the Developing World. The panel, which featured Lance Armstrong, [...]

Talking about My Generation: Global Health Rocks
As more than 200 global health experts and enthusiasts gathered at PATH’s headquarters in Seattle, one thing was clear – the President’s Global Health Initiative promises to bring exciting new opportunities for those working to advance the global health agenda. In a discussion led by Drs. Anne-Marie Slaughter, Helene Gayle and Tachi Yamada on the need for greater innovation, entrepreneurial approaches and broad range participation in global health, I was most intrigued by Dr. Slaughter’s comments about the need to engage young people in the global health movement – a largely untapped audience with the enormous potential to help elevate issues and mobilize key communities.

Show Me The Billions
Earlier this summer Bill Gates and Warren Buffett called on their billionaire peers to join the Giving Pledge. As part of the pledge, the richest Americans will donate the majority of their wealth to address the world’s biggest needs. It’s not a formal contract or legally binding; it’s simply a moral commitment. Forty billionaires have [...]
